Sam Brighton is in a bad place. A recent widower, he's spiraling into despair over the sudden loss of his wife, who was killed by the reckless actions of another in a car crash.  Skipping work, not taking care of himself, and drinking too much, he's managed to alienate everyone close to him.  

Returning to his wife's hometown of Delavan to escape everybody, he experiences a series of surprise coincidences and comedic events. He soon realizes self-pity and isolation are not the type of life he's meant to live.
